Researchers are encouraged to submit Game Papers in which they present original work focusing on the design and experience of computer game play. Creative communities that design and develop commercial and non-commercial video games, as well as academic scholars studying video games, game play, human-computer interaction, and game culture are welcome to submit rigorous innovative work in the field.

Game Papers explore key issues in video games, inform and substantively advance our current state of knowledge and understanding, and foster new areas for investigation that will drive the next generation of design and player experience. Suggested topics include:

• Analysis and understanding of the player experience
• Serious games
• Social network games
• Ethics and values in game play and design
• Experimental game design and game genres
• Social and cultural aspects of game play
• Transmedia storytelling, world-building, and games
• Avatars and character design
• Sound design and music in games
• Legal, and political aspects
• Narrative in games
• Aesthetic and critical analysis
• Game and game culture preservation and archiving
• Cross-cultural analyses
• Networked play (including consoles)
• Gender, race, and sexuality in games
• Co-creative culture (for example., modding, machinima, iterative "live" design in collaboration with a game community)
• Independent game development
• Economics and business models in the game industry
• Game production and labor

Submitters are encouraged to submit papers on other relevant topics as well.

Researchers should follow SIGGRAPH guidelines on the various ways to participate.

All papers will be reviewed by an independent scholarly committee, which will provide written feedback on each paper. Accepted papers are allocated a 20 minute presentation slot at the conference and published in Sandbox 2011: ACM SIGGRAPH Video Game Proceedings as a part of the ACM SIGGRAPH 2011 Full Conference DVD-ROM publication.

In addition to formal papers, SIGGRAPH 2011 offers several other presentation opportunities, including Talks, Panels, Posters, and a variety of other formats, all of which welcome game-related submissions. How to Submit

Log in to the SIGGRAPH Information System, select "Begin a New Submission," and then select "create" for the Game (Sandbox) Papers submission form. You will be asked for:

  • A 50-word (maximum) summary of your paper and a 350-word (maximum) abstract (copy and paste from the paper you’re submitting) and contact information (page 1).
  • Focus of your paper (page 2).
  • Permissions and rights pertaining to your submission (page 3).
  • Representative images of your paper and your actual paper (page 4).
  • Information on any additional contributors or authors (page 5).

Paper Requirements

All Game Papers must meet the following requirements:

  • NO AUTHOR NAMES OR AFFILIATIONS OR CONTACT INFORMATION can be included on your paper (this is a “blind” review process). Any papers that include indications of the authors’ identities will not be reviewed. During the submission process, you will be assigned a submission ID. You will need to add this ID to the top of the first page of your paper. This will link your paper to your submission, so even though we won’t know your name(s) during the review process, we will be able to make that association after the review process has occurred (or during the process if necessary).
  • Submission as a PDF file with the following (and in the following order):

    Title of your paper

    Abstract (maximum of 350 words). This should include descriptions of your approach, your evidence, your interpretations of the evidence, and why your topic is important to particular communities. It should represent a summary version of your paper.

    Keywords to help ensure your submission is reviewed and juried by appropriate reviewers. See Frequently Asked Questions for more information about keywords and Publication Requirements for a detailed description of the paper.

    Body text (maximum 3,500 words). You should make sure you appropriately situate your work within the existing literature relevant to the subject, specify your method (where disciplinary conventions apply), clearly discuss the scholarly significance of the work and its contribution to the field, and provide a bibliography. You may also include appendices if applicable.

General Information

1. All fields on the submission form must be completed by 18 January 2011. Completing the submission form will generate a submission ID for your paper. You will use this submission ID to help keep your paper anonymous, by adding it to the top of the first page of your paper before submitting, (Be sure to also remove authors' names and affiliations from your paper). Your paper must be uploaded no later than 18 January 2011, 22:00 UTC/GMT. See Timeline (tab above).

2. Submissions will be administratively rejected without review if it is found that:

a. Author names or affiliations are included in the abstract or the full paper (only the submission ID must appear on the abstract or paper).

b. The submission violates the ACM Policy and Procedures on Plagiarism.

c. The submission is a dual submission; that is, if the submission is simultaneously under review for any other conference or publication or for any other SIGGRAPH 2011 program. For more details see Frequently Asked Questions.

Non-native English speakers may use the English Review Service to help improve the text of submissions. Please note that this process takes time, so plan far ahead.

All submitters must complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement (formerly the Acceptance Agreement) before the submission deadline. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted.

Educator’s Resources Submission option. Those submitting content to a SIGGRAPH conference have the option of donating materials of educational value to ACM SIGGRAPH online resources for the benefit of the education community. Learn more

The Game Papers Committee and a set of external reviewers, both comprised of games experts and subject-matter experts, will review submitted papers and select papers for publication in the Sandbox 2011: ACM SIGGRAPH Video Game Proceedings.

The Review Team
The Game Papers review team is comprised of the Game Papers Chair, who was chosen by the SIGGRAPH 2011 Gaming Director and Conference Chair; the Game Papers Advisory Board, consisting of past Game Papers Chairs and other qualified advisors, chosen by the SIGGRAPH 2011 Game Papers Chair; and the Game Papers Committee, chosen by the Game Papers Chair with the assistance of the members of the Game Papers Advisory Board and representing a broad spectrum of game design, development, and research expertise.

The Review Process
1. Following the submission deadline, the Game Papers Chair and several others will conduct a papers sort. During this process, they will assign papers to two reviewers for preliminary review. Papers that are inappropriate may be rejected during this assignment process, without being reviewed further. Normally, a paper will only be rejected at this stage if it is clearly off-topic for a SIGGRAPH 2011 Game Paper, if the abstract or full paper clearly identifies any of the authors or their affiliations, if the abstract exceeds the 350-word limit, if the paper clearly exceeds the 3,500-word limit (giving the submission an unfair advantage over those who adhered to the word limitation), or if the paper has been published previously, has been submitted more than once to SIGGRAPH 2011 (for example, to another review committee), or it has been submitted simultaneously to another conference or journal. 2. All papers that pass the preliminary review are distributed to two reviewers. All paper reviewers grade papers on a scale of 1 to 5 in the following categories:

  • Clarity of topic and/or purpose
  • Quality and organization of the paper
  • Quality of evidence and/or data
  • Appropriateness of outcomes, claims, or recommendations
  • Appropriateness of references or bibliography
  • Significance of the contribution to the field
  • Audience relevance and/or appeal

All reviews include “required” comments to the review committee and comments to the author(s).

Possible Outcomes for a Paper
Email notifications of the Game Papers Committee's decisions should be sent by 22:00 UTC/GMT, Monday, 1 March 2011. Regardless of acceptance or rejection, reviewer comments and scores will be made available online in the submission system at the time decisions are sent out. The notifications will place each paper in one of the following three categories:

1. Rejected.

2. Conditionally accepted for publication in Sandbox 2011: ACM SIGGRAPH Video Game Proceedings. Game papers are expected to be published. If they are considered to have the potential for publication, but are not considered ready for publication, they are only conditionally accepted. Upon conditional acceptance, authors will receive comments regarding issues that need to be addressed to make their papers ready for publication. Authors can then resubmit a modified version for further review and comment. Revised papers must be uploaded no later than 22:00 UTC/GMT, 19 March 2011 or they will be rejected from presentation and publication. If upon review, revisions are still required, authors will be provided with additional information regarding necessary revisions and will have until 22:00 UTC/GMT, 2 April, 2011 to submit a final version of their papers. Papers that do not meet the review committee’s approval will not be presented or published, even if uploaded by 22:00 UTC/GMT, 2 April, 2011. Reviewers will work diligently with the authors to help prevent rejection from occurring. See Publication Requirements for a detailed description of the requirements for the publication-ready paper.

3. Accepted for publication in Sandbox 2011: ACM SIGGRAPH Video Game Proceedings. A small number of papers that are accepted during the review process may be considered ready for publication. If this happens, there are not additional steps to be taken by the authors in terms of preparing their publication-ready paper. See Publication Requirements for a detailed description of the requirements for the publication-ready paper.

Authors of papers conditionally accepted by the committee must prepare an electronic, camera-ready version of their papers in ACM-standard format for a second reviewing process, and then for eventual publication in Sandbox 2011: ACM SIGGRAPH Video Game Proceedings as a part of the ACM SIGGRAPH 2011 Full Conference DVD-ROM publication. SIGGRAPH 2011 will also produce a DVD-ROM of all the accepted papers, including submitted supplementary material. See Publication Requirements for a detailed description of the requirements for the publication-ready paper. An ACM Copyright Form must be signed for each accepted paper; you may wish to review this (or have your employer do so) ahead of time. Note that this form is different from the Technical Papers copyright form. Be sure to use the correct form.

By 1 March 2011 (22:00 UTC/GMT), notification of acceptances and rejections should be sent to authors. Notification for those with conditional acceptances may also include a list of required changes. Members of the Game Papers Committee will be assigned as reviewers and referees for the revision cycle. A few days after notification, any changes to the paper title, list of authors, or 30-word paper summary will be due back to your referee. Changes to the paper title must be approved by the referees. Referees also have final say over the length of the publication-ready version of the paper. Therefore, it is recommended that you first obtain permission from your referee on a proposed final length, before making substantial changes to your paper.

A revised version of your paper is due no later than 04 April, 2011 (22:00 UTC/GMT). The final PDF file is due on 30 April, 2011 (22:00 UTC/GMT). During the two weeks between these two dates, the reviewers and authors will communicate via the SIS bulletin board process about the adequacy of the changes in the revisions. Sometimes, changes are not initially considered adequate, or introduce new problems, so further revision may be required. If the initial revised version is submitted sooner than 04 April 2011, this will provide even more time for iterated revisions. It is hoped that all provisionally accepted papers will be accepted for publication by the end of this process, but this is not guaranteed. When writing successive revisions, the reviewers' jobs are easier if you use a different color for the added or revised text in each new version. (But please remember to remove these colors in the final version.) It also helps to describe the changes in the bulletin-board post to which you attach the revision.

Paper Presentation
Presentation sessions are typically 105 minutes long and are comprised of multiple papers. The format of the presentations will be determined by the review and program committees.

Session Room Set-Up and Equipment
A complete summary of the resources available for presentation of your paper. Arrangements for equipment outside the standard set-up are the sole responsibility of the paper presenter.

Information on how SIGGRAPH 2011 will support your participation if your work is accepted.

Authorization for Use
Any material that supports a paper's acceptance for publication must be available as part of the final publication. Thus, all material uploaded for review in the "public materials that are considered part of the submission" section of the submission form, including supplementary text, images, and videos, whether utilized in the review process or not, will become ACM-copyrighted material upon acceptance, and the required permission forms must be sent to ACM with the submission.
